Can AI Help the Publishing Industry?

[Approximate Reading Time : 4 mins]

AI is not new to publishing. As it stands currently, AI has begun to transform the publishing industry just as much as any other global industry. Ever since the introduction of AI-powered ChatGPT in 2022, conversation bots have kick-started a dialogue on how AI will impact the realm of publishing. Many fear that automation will take away their jobs, but automation is not autonomous. AI relies on humans at all levels. When vast, seemingly endless, data has to be made use of, make AI your little assistant. AI works through machine learning, wherein the computer processes the data fed into it, identifies patterns, and analyzes how a human does the job. The computer then calibrates an algorithm to perform the same and similar tasks. The more you use it, the better it becomes making AI the preferred option if businesses are looking to cut production costs, errors, and man-hours.

  • AI has been employed currently to report on fact-based topics like sports, and the similarity is uncanny. The technology for reporting is primitive when compared to that required to write quality descriptions or narrations.
  • Manually reformatting repetitive content to fit the requirements of different publishing platforms can be tedious. AI software doesn’t get bored and can reproduce the same content in the desired format within a short period of time. It uses templates and an editor’s guidance to complete the task.
  • Content translation is also time-consuming, especially when it involves localization. The conventional automated translation software is not at par with translations by humans. However, experiments on natural language processing (NLP), which analyzes translations by humans to better understand the human language, are ongoing.
  • Some AI technologies detect plagiarism, spam, and abusive or inappropriate comments and remove them, which is quite common.
  • Chatbots personalize user experience by greeting users, interacting with them, and answering their queries, but AI has progressed to enable chatbots to perform other crucial functions, including managing user traffic and subscriptions and providing the latest updates and news to users. AI is now well equipped to identify and correct syntax, grammar, and complex errors for the user.
  • Auto-tagging of unstructured data is possible with AI-powered technology. Image recognition and auto-tagging by AI save money and time by making image archives easier to use so that assets need not be bought again.
  • AI finds its use in journal submissions and fast-track articles publication.
  • Content creation is an aspect that AI can simplify with its ability to generate relevant content, draft content ideas, and organize content efficiently for better engagement.
  • Content personalization is a revenue-generating market strategy. You can track user behavior with AI, and it can recommend content according to the user’s preferences, consumption patterns, and what is likely to engage them better.

Similarly, prediction of future behavior is also possible with data science and predictive deep learning and analysis. This is particularly helpful when publications have subscribers. As digital publishers often grapple with security issues and weak points in their online processes, AI can utilize its inherent machine learning algorithms to detect breaches, identifiable with previous data, and implement automated safety measures accordingly. Though AI has been proven to accomplish much, the world is yet to see robot-written fiction. AI can imitate the writing style of an author, but the content is sometimes hard for readers to grasp. Publishers can utilise AI to: edit, format, typeset, translate, and tag content; observe user trends; and understand the audience, competitors, and market. AI can help streamline and increase the efficiency of various publishing processes and also enhance content quality and user experience. It can also offer digital publishing companies insights on audience behavior to help with content optimization. At present, a few AI-centered tools and technologies are making their presence felt in the digital publishing industry. Some of them include NLP, sentiment analysis tools, computer-generated images (CGI), and chatbots. A subset of AI, NLP is used to learn, understand, and interpret human language. Grammarly is an AI-powered NLP tool that can perform simple tasks such as editing and formatting. Sentiment analysis gauges the audience’s reaction and engagement to topic or piece of content by providing real-time data. Such tools use an AI software to automatically detect the frequency, emotion, tone, and urgency in online conversations. These conversations are then assigned a positive, negative, or neutral connotation, thereby, helping publishers and users prioritize queries accordingly. Some of the tools currently in use for sentiment analysis are MonkeyLearn and Lexalytics. AI has found a strong platform in the publishing industry with its multifunctional and feature-rich service. Even in academic publishing, a few journals are now using AI to reduce time from submission to publication by automating the prescreening and review processes. Academic authors can use AI to help improve content readability, avoid unintentional plagiarism, and improve grammatical effectiveness for matter-intensive content. AI is beginning to transform how research is evaluated by improving the most important aspects of academic publishing: the peer review process. Peer review continues to be a challenge for reviewers and authors alike, as it is time intensive and relies on the availability and expertise of reviewers, meaning there are high chances of reviewer mismatch and reviewer fatigue among other challenges. Understanding the significance of and challenges in peer review will provide a detailed picture on how and why AI is important for academic publishing.
